The Pigmon Ranch

The Pigmon Ranch is located between Balmorhea and Toyah, Texas, in Reeves County. The area is made up of rock piles that form hills up to about 40 feet high. Some of the agate, jasper, flint and chert in these rock piles have characteristics in common with agate found on other ranches and road cuts in the Big Bend, but there are also pieces that don’t look like anything I’ve seen on other ranches in my 25 years of leading field trips.

The ranch is easy to access in any vehicle for 2 of the 3 hunting locations because the main road through the ranch is paved. The third area is accessed by a network of dirt roads which may be usable by 2-wheel drive cars, depending upon the ground clearance of the vehicle and the skill of the driver.

The photos below are categorized into photos of the area, cut agates, and uncut agates.

RANCH PHOTOS

You can see agate in the foreground in this picture of the Pigmon Ranch.

SLAB PHOTOS

The pictures below are slabs cut from agates found on the Pigmon Ranch by Teri Smith. Johnny French slabbed the agates and took the photos.

UNCUT AGATES

The photos below are of agates as I found them, with the dirt washed off. Photos were taken by Johnny French and Teri Smith.

This is one of the only two pseudomorphs that I’ve found at the Pigmon Ranch. The other is shown above in the slab section. The pseudomorph didn’t show on the outside of that rock as it does on this one.
